Counting Homeless Youth
This guide, published in October 2010 by the National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH), provides specific recommendations for how best to include unaccompanied homeless youth in the local Point in Time (PIT) counts that will be conducted in January 2011. It includes strategies on how to involve key stakeholders in the PIT count planning process, indicates locations where homeless youth may be found, and details ways to facilitate data collection, among other key action steps.

Using What We Know: Supporting the Education of Unaccompanied Homeless Youth
This 2008 report from the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) provides policy and practice recommendations distilled from over 100 interviews with NAEHCY members across the country. Recommendations focus on seven key findings that, implemented as a continuum of support, will assist in increasing enrollment, attendance, and success in school for homeless unaccompanied youth, and in reengaging young people who have left school.

Program Description: The Child In Transition/Homeless Project, Anchorage School District's McKinney-Vento/Title I program, provides support specifically for homeless adolescents addressing issues encountered as they continue and complete their secondary education. Barbara Dexter, Secondary Teacher Specialist, works with adolescents, especially youth on their own, and provides outreach, advocacy, supplemental educational services, and support to access non-educational services. Two particular areas of expertise are relationships with the child welfare department and supplemental academic instruction, including an evening program for youth on their own.
