One in seven American children are living with an unemployed parent as a result of the current recession. Totaling 10.5 million kids under the age of 18, this January 2010 report from First Focus makes the alarming finding that children are almost twice as likely to be affected by unemployment than adults. Young people with an unemployed parent have a greater chance of experiencing homelessness, suffering from child abuse, failing to complete high school or college, and living in adult poverty than other children.

This article appeared in the January 2009 edition (Vol. 56, No. 5) of NewsLeader, the award-winning newspaper published by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). This timely article explores the spillover effects of the U.S. economic crisis into our nation's public schools and suggests ways that principals can take the lead in supporting the education of students experiencing homelessness. Foreclosure-Response.org is an online guide to foreclosure prevention and neighborhood stabilization developed and maintained by the Center for Housing Policy, KnowledgePlex, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), and the Urban Institute. The site includes easily accessible information on a broad range of state and local policy solutions, as well as tools to create customized data reports and maps and participate in interactive online discussions.

While researchers have examined the collateral impact of foreclosure on surrounding properties and neighborhoods, this report from The Furman Center is a rare look at how children may be impacted by the foreclosure crisis. The report presents findings from the first phase of a two-part analysis of how foreclosures affect children. It estimates the number of public school students in all grades (K-12) whose families live in properties that entered foreclosure in New York City during the 2003-04 and 2006-07 school years, and finds that this issue is widespread and growing, impacting 1 in 50 public school students in 2006-07. The report also compares the social and demographic characteristics of these students, and their schools, to those of other students.

This webpage from the National Low Income Housing Coalition profiles the impact of the current housing crisis on renters and provides an up-to-date resources on helping renters and lower income families in foreclosure.

Largely due to the economic and housing crises, many school districts across the country report increases in the number of homeless students in the classroom. The Economic Crisis Hits Home presents the results of a survey of local homeless education liaisons conducted by the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) and First Focus between October 24 and December 10, 2008. Based on these findings, the report also presents policy recommendations for the new Administration and Congress, as well as practice recommendations for schools and community agencies.

The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) partnered with the Center for Community Capital (CCC) at the University of North Carolina to conduct interviews with 25 Latino families who had recently experienced foreclosure. Interviewers asked in-depth questions on a variety of issues related to the overall well-being of the family with a special emphasis on the status of their children. This report summarizes the major findings from these interviews.

This July 2008 brief from the Partnership for America's Economic Success discusses the effects of the recent mortgage and foreclosure crisis on young children. The brief provides statistics on the affordability crisis and supports the essential nature of a stable, healthy, safe residence for a young child's growth.

This May 2009 report from The Urban Institute presents the results of a literature review on the foreclosure crisis that is now affecting the United States. The report reviews what is known currently about (1) the way foreclosures impact families; (2) how foreclosures affect communities; and (3) the efforts now underway, or being suggested, to address the crisis, focusing on actions at the local level. The report also offers recommendations on priorities for additional research to fill important gaps in the knowledge base.
